Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation Awards Grant for Pilot at UVA Health

“A new national focus is being brought to reducing hospital greenhouse gas emissions and waste through the Sustainable Healthcare Certification program of The Joint Commission, and the computer vision-assisted software Dr. Meyer is proposing directly supports this initiative,” said Hina Mehta, VIPC’s Director for University Programs. “While there is a lot that still needs to be learned, understood, and implemented before widespread adoption occurs, CCF funding will be instrumental in addressing the endemic of excess waste from operating rooms and expediting Dr. Meyer’s vision for more sustainable healthcare solutions.” Here is the link to the VIPC press release.

Foundational Research Published in Surgery: Selected "Best in Surgery"

Surgeons’ perspectives on operating room waste: Multicenter survey was published in the journal Surgery. This collaboration between UVA and UCSF details the surgeons thoughts on OR waste. Notably, they estimate 27% of items opened on the scrub table at the start of surgery remain unused on the table at the end of surgery. And impressively, 95% of surgeons were willing to modify their OR workflow if it resulted in reduced waste. Surgery has awarded us the distinction as one of the "Best in Surgery" as they found the work done in the article innovative. Here is the link to Meyer et al. Surgery 2022.
